Check the oil for water. Pop the valve cover off and check the timing chain guides/cover. Also, do a compression check. That's where I'd start.

The things I listed are a few of the "problems" that the 20R/22R/RE/RETs encounter. Failure is usually maintenance-related (or lack of) or just plain normal, high mileage wear. The motors aren't great for power, but they are damn near indestructable. The trucks that are built around them are just as durable, except for rust.

Pretty much what Jason said as far as the durability of the trucks. I have an 87 with around 300K mileage and it's still running hard, jsut make sure you do maintenance or something breaks (like a timing chain). The earyly 80s pikcups (love the round style) did have a problem with preping the paint jobs or something cause the paint did stick too well to the hood or roof of the cab, but that may have been color specific ( we had a blue truck with that issue).

Like they said; the timing chain. The service interval is 100K for those IIRC. Listen for it to rattle on start up.
2K seems high. Even more so with a blown tranny. Those trannys are among the weakest Toyota used on there trucks. To me, mileage isn't really the issue on a vehicle that old, it's the wiring. It becomes brittle and you can spend a lot of time chasing gremlins.

I know very little about those older Toyotas, but they sure look cool. I especially like those old style rims, too.

Craig got a good point with wiring but the good thing about going that old is theres not alot of wiring unless you want to keep all the lights and stuff working....but sheetmetal and lots of wiring overrated anyways
