Looks like I'll be leaving the South! Just got offered a job at Langley AFB in Virginia. Never been up there, don't know anything about the area, hopefully some good wheeling nearby. If I do get it I won't be moving until around Dec or Jan, my goal before then is to actually meet the mysterious Chris King. Maybe ICBM? Hell I've been gone so much lately I could use a change in jobs. I leave Monday morning for two weeks down in San Antonio.

Yeah I'm driving down but I take Highway 79 down, it's faster than going over to dallas and then down the 35.

Bill:
I was stationed for 4 years at Norfolk NS across the bridge tunnel from Langley. Most wheeling in the area is on the beach. Chincoteague/Assateague (on the peninsula) or the Outer Banks (North Carolina), both are about an hour and a half away.
Their are some mud bogs around Richmond (40 mins away), and around Havelock N.C. (MCAS, dont remember the name right now, 1.5 hours away).
For any rock crawling you need to go to Tennassee, Kentucky, or West Virginia, a 4+ hour ride.
Good luck the Hampton Roads area sucks major ass.
Keep your home state registration on your vehicles or you'll have to pay city tax in addition to state licensing. And be required to follow state inspection guidelines which my truck could never pass. (cracked windshield fails you).
Be prepared for higher housing costs, more crime, more traffic, and more rude jackasses.
They tax you for everything in Virginia and the state police love to stop cars for the slightest infraction.
On the bright side if you like fishing or boating the ocean is warm out there cause the Gulf Stream travels close to shore, you can go swimming as late as October.

Thanks for the info. I guess the trails will be further away than I figured. Beach wheeling sounds interesting, never done that. I have heard some bad things about the Hampton Roads area, but this is a job opportunity that I just can't pass up. It's a staff job at ACC if that means anything to you. Three year controlled tour, so if we don't like it up there there is an end in sight. If I get approved I'll probably change my home residence state from CA to LA before I leave as vehicle reg is only $40 for two years here.

"It's a staff job at ACC"
I spent over 20 years in Naval aviation. Learned a little from the fly boys in blue, I got ya.
Beach wheeling is fun, but has hazards.
You have to wash your truck off asap after wheeling, especially the under carriage.
Never spin your wheels in sand, if you do your done.
Lowest tire inflation possible is your friend.
Always pay attention to where you park, the tide comes and goes without regard for parked vehicles.
If you cross moving water, always check the depth first, even if you crossed it a half hour ago check again. Small insignificant feeder streams can build terrific undertows that will carve out a canyon for you to drop into.
Dont remember the address but there some great web sites for the Outerbanks, fishing sites mostly but they have alot of info on how to drive on the beach and where to drive on the beach. A search for "Outerbanks" should show most of them.
Chincoteague has an annual wild horse run on the beach in August(?), they swim them from a nearby island rope them and auction them off to support the towns fire department. Neat to watch.
From N.C. you can drive up the beach towards VA for about 17 miles, they have wild horses roaming the dunes. VA doesnt allow vehicles on the beach from Back Bay to the state line unless your a resident of this small town (dont remember the name) but you can drive up the beach from N.C. to the town.
What part of CA. you from?

Riverside, but I've been out of there so long it's hard to claim it as home anymore.
