Thats aluminium Diamond plate which really isnt the best for skid plates. It will drag and gouge on rocks, your better off finding steel for skid plates.
Huh...I didn't see that it was aluminum.

I could be wrong, but I thought it had more to do with the diamond plate pattern itself tending to "catch" on rocks and obstacles, whereas a smooth plate just glides over it since it's smooth. Unless I misunderstood and it's just that 1/4" thick aluminum simply isn't strong enough? I'm sure it's alot lighter than 1/4" steel, though.
